County "Strikes" A Second Time
DC Seniors Prevail on Mission to the CHSIHL Mile High Spirit Cup
Parker Fieldhouse hosted the 2009 CHSIHL State Championships where “standing room only” seating and defening crowds were the rule of the day. The ear shattering crowd noise
crescendo-ed
as Douglas County stepped onto the rink, and we all knew we were in for an incredible inline hockey showdown.

The first period was a “clinic” in defense as both teams were unrelenting with end-to-end defensive pressure that resulted in a Douglas County 1-0 haft time lead. Into the second period it almost appeared as a foregone conclusion as DC quickly went ahead with a 3-1 lead that left Smoky Hill wondering how to put a crack into the brick wall put up by 6-foot plus Jonathon Fritts. DC held that lead well into the second period, until the Smoky Hill offense found a way to get their first goal from senior defenseman, Oliver Hyde and then their next goal from the League's Varsity 5A Top Defenseman, Kyle Phelps respectively.
Ultimately, Douglas County goalie, Jonathon Fritts, a veteran to the State Championship held his ground against Smoky's powerhouse offense,

holding them to only 2 goals. The DC defense was working overtime as they found ways to hold least years league MVP, Rees Bernot to only 1 point, while holding one of their top scores, sophmore, CJ Bateman pointless.
Smoky put up a great fight and held their own against what appeared to be a more experienced and bigger Douglas County . But, one thing is clear…Smoky is young, talented, and on their own mission. So, don't count them out as one of next season's top seeds for the 2010 CHSIHL State Championships.
